Q: What are acceptable forms of identification?

  • California Driver’s License

  • Consular ID Document
  • Two credible witnesses (for a person who does not have current ID)

Q: What if the signer has no identification?
Notarization may be completed with two “credible witnesses” present at the time of signing. The credible witnesses will attest to the identity of the signer while providing valid identification, and they must not be related to the signer.

Q: What is a Notary?
A Notary is a government-appointed person of proven integrity to witness the signing of documents. Among other duties, the Notary identifies the signer(s) and administers oaths.

Q: What is a Loan Signing Agent?
A Loan Signing Agent is a commissioned Notary Public specializing in obtaining and notarizing the signatures of the parties involved in a real estate loan transaction. Using a Loan Signing Agent ensures a prompt and properly executed loan closing.

Q: Why is a document notarized?
To discourage fraudulent execution of documents. As an impartial witness, the Notary verifies that the signer personally appears in the presence of the Notary; that the person signing is who he/she claims to be; and that the signer is entering into the agreement knowingly and willingly.

Q: Does notarization indicate that the document is true or legal?
No, a Notary is not responsible for certifying the contents or the accuracy of the documents. A Notary certifies the identity of the signer(s).

Q: Can a Notary help prepare or advise on the content of the documents?
No, the Notary is an impartial witness and can only verify identity of the signer(s) and witness the actual signing of the documents.
